OUR FOUNDER: MARY GIACALONE — A PIONEER IN POWER SKATING
Founder of Scary Skate (est. 1986), Mary is recognized as one of North America’s most influential power-skating instructors. Her groundbreaking program Motion on Ice was adopted by 27 hockey centres across the continent. As the youngest female professional power-skating coach hired by a pro team (Saginaw Generals – IHL), she has trained athletes and organizations at every major level:
• Power-skating coach for elite European Division 1 teams
• Creator of Power Before Skating video (1997)

• Skating coach for the Oshawa Generals (2001–2005) & Belleville Bulls (2005–2014)

Ryan Martindale — Pro Player & Hockey Canada Certified Skills Coach
A former OHL standout, World U-17 Gold Medalist, NHL Draft pick (Edmonton Oilers), and 7-year pro, Ryan brings high-level playing and coaching expertise. He has competed internationally—including representing Team Canada at the Spengler Cup—and now trains athletes across Minor, Junior, and Professional levels with Eastern Elite.
Justin Caruana — OUA Coach of the Year & High-Performance Leader
A championship-winning OHL forward and USports alumnus, Justin has spent over a decade developing elite athletes at Ontario Tech University, where he became Head Coach in 2016. Honoured as OUA Coach of the Year (2021–22), he brings university-level strategy, leadership, and player-development excellence.
Brandon Staal — Educator, Skating Technician & Multi-Sport Athlete
Brandon combines high-end skating fundamentals, 15+ years of coaching experience, and a Physical Education Honours Degree. A long-time educator with the Durham School Board, his teaching expertise translates into clear, high-impact instruction on the ice.
Justin Bean — Pro Defenseman & Elite Development Coach
Justin’s journey—from undrafted OHL hopeful to OUA captain to ECHL Defenseman of the Year—sets the standard for perseverance and elite development. His experience across the OHL, Jr. A, USports, and professional ranks provides players with NHL-track defensive insights and pro-level detail.
Guy Jacobs — Former NHL-Signed Player & Pro Coach
With a Junior career across the OHL and OJHL and an NHL contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, Guy brings decades of pro playing and coaching experience. A former Player/Coach and OMHA mentor, he offers high-level teaching, discipline, and developmental structure.
Connor Hale — OJHL Captain, USports Champion & Defensive Specialist
A Whitby Wildcats AAA product and OHL draft pick, Connor enjoyed a strong Junior career before anchoring York University’s blue line and capturing an OUA Championship. His defensive IQ, leadership background, and modern development approach help young players elevate rapidly.
