PH Development is a high-performance hockey development brand built on professional experience, advanced education, and a deep commitment to giving back to the game. Founded and directed by Ben Payne, PH Development delivers elite-level skills training rooted in real-world playing experience and modern player development principles.
About the Founder – Ben Payne
Founder and Director Ben Payne grew up playing competitive hockey in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, British Columbia. His playing career spans every major stage of player development—rep and select hockey, two seasons in the PIJHL, and four seasons in the BCHL.
Following junior hockey, Ben earned an NCAA scholarship to play at Concordia College in Minnesota, where he also completed his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing Communications and Business.
After university, Ben pursued professional hockey overseas, playing five seasons in Austria and Germany as an import player. During his professional career, he furthered his education by earning a Master of Science in Organisation Studies from the University of Innsbruck—a rare combination of elite sport and advanced academic training.
Coaching & Development Expertise
While playing professionally in Europe, Ben became deeply involved in coaching and player development. Working with youth hockey clubs across Germany and Austria, he quickly gained recognition for his ability to communicate effectively, break down skill mechanics, and elevate skating performance.
Ben’s strengths as an elite skater, combined with his academic background and professional playing experience, made him highly sought after as a skills and power skating coach, working with both teams and individual athletes focused on long-term development.
Ben is a Hockey Canada Certified Skills Coach, a prestigious designation awarded through a selective application process. Hockey Canada Skills Coaches are recognized internationally and have a proven track record of developing players at the NHL and international levels.
The PH Logo & Program Inception
PH Development was born from resilience, perspective, and purpose.
In 2013, Ben was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, requiring surgery just as he was preparing to begin his professional career overseas. The setback temporarily paused his playing career—but it also opened the door to coaching, mentorship, and a deeper appreciation for the game.
During this time, Ben became involved in local minor hockey and co-founded a charity hockey game alongside his friend, former teammate, and ex-NHL player Victor Bartley, with all proceeds donated to Crohn’s Colitis Canada.
The original charity logo from that event ultimately evolved into the official PH Development logo—symbolizing perseverance, community, and giving back. What began as a cause-driven initiative quickly grew into a full-scale development program built to help players maximize their potential on and off the ice.
