Trainer Jo is one of Canada’s most accomplished and well-rounded fitness professionals—combining 33 years of martial arts mastery, elite-level education, rehabilitation expertise, and evidence-based coaching.
Born and raised in the mountains of South Korea, Jo developed resilience and discipline early in life. At 10, he was trekking an hour through untouched nature just to get to school. By 12, he began working part-time—ultimately holding over 15 jobs before discovering his passion for personal training.
From Engineering to Elite Training Expertise
In South Korea, fitness trainers traditionally earned very little, so in 2000 Jo pursued a Bachelor’s in Safety Engineering at Seoul National University of Science & Technology. Throughout university he continued practicing Taekwondo until a major knee injury and failed surgery led him into a 2-year rehabilitation program at Samsung Hospital. There, he discovered strength training and swimming—rebuilding his knee from near immobility and earning his Lifeguard certification while weighing just 127 lbs.
This recovery sparked his lifelong passion for biomechanics, corrective training, and human performance.
Arrival in Canada & Rise to the Top
In 2005, Jo moved to Canada to complete a Taekwondo Master program. Within a year he became a certified personal trainer and quickly rose through the ranks at GoodLife Fitness, becoming the youngest Level 6 trainer nationwide (2006–2012).
Driven by relentless curiosity, he woke daily at 4:30 a.m. to study anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, NLP, nutrition, and performance science. He also pursued bodybuilding—eventually reaching 205 lbs and winning:
• 1st Place – IDFA Natural Bodybuilding (Middleweight)
• Arnold Classic Taekwondo Champion

In 2012, seeking bigger impact, Jo opened JOFITNESS.
By 2017, he earned Canada’s Top Personal Trainer Award.
